These are some common uses of purposely installed spyware by people that actually have a vested interest in the user of the target computer. But what about the other kind?

The other kind is installed without your knowledge, an without your permission. Often times they come along with something that you may have thought was "free," like a handy desktop icon, or some file sharing software. The free ones are great, but sometimes they aren't up to date enough to take care of the latest spyware programs out there. When this happens, sometimes the best thing to do is pay for a program. That way you'll not only be up to date, but you'll have something continuously protecting your computer at all times.
